Course outlines for the 1st semester of academic year 2010/11 in TSMU in the Department of History of Medicine & Bioethics
This course will be taught in two slots (one lecture/seminar and one tutorial) in Semester I.
The lectures take place on Mondays and Thursdays.(I - IV groups from November 15th, 2010)
Seminars are scheduled for the following times (this will be confirmed in the first lecture):
The short paper facilitates group discussion and enables formative assessment including peer assessment. The long essay provides an opportunity for some aspect of the content to be considered in greater depth so as to fulfill the learning outcomes to encourage students to commit some key cases to memory.
All reading necessary to prepare for the tutorial will be posted on the Course website in advance of each lecture.

Level - undergraduate students of 1st year
Pre-requisites - None
Duration - 60 hours total student time over one semester
Teaching Pattern - 30 academic hours of contact time ( lecture and tutorial/seminars)
Teaching Methods - Lectures/Seminars/Tutorials supported through the use of the virtual learning environment
Assessment - One 700-1000 word review paper which will progress in
one 1500-2500 word final essay with presentation - 15 %
in class participation - 5% plus participation in discussions 20%;
mid-term assessment - 20%
final exam - 40 %
In writing your essay you should use at least six sources (i.e. books, articles, chapters, and websites), out of which two should be books. Remember, using a book does not necessarily mean reading it from cover to cover.
Extra in depth reading is required from time to time for the essays and for exam preparation as listed on the website.
